To build a sense of community, we have been doing sharing circles. On Friday, we are having a sharing circle, where students are to share one thing about themselves. Students must bring an artifact that represents what they are sharing. Students are encouraged to think of convenience when selecting the artifact to bring. Items that are too large, too sentimental, too fragile, or alive should not be brought; instead, students may bring a photo of that artifact. Examples of artifacts: trophy, medal, stuffie, utensil, team jersey, hockey puck, etc.
"Security is based on how solid our ties are."
Students are exploring the concept of security and risk through the topic of immigration. Their task is to explain the following: When/Where their family arrived in Alberta, origin of their last name, meaning of their last name, their family's immigration story. Students have brought home a sheet to record their answers. Please see the exemplar below for clarity of task We will be using the Word Journeys Spelling Program to develop our students' spelling skills. These word lists are intended to teach students specific spelling rules. It is not expected that students memorize how to spell these words. Instead, they are to explore what other words share the same spelling rule. New words can be found in the newspaper, in home reading books, in TV advertisements, or in conversations. Your child is expected to know which spelling group they belong to.
